Efthymios Papageorgiou
Hi! I’m Efthimis Papageorgiou, but you can call me Makis. I was born in Athens, but for many years now I’ve been living in Heraklion, Crete, where I’m currently a Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the University of Crete. Alongside my studies, I work as a graduate research assistant at the Information Systems Lab at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH).
My main passion lies in understanding and controlling large-scale computing systems. I enjoy exploring both traditional control techniques and modern approaches like reinforcement learning. What excites me most is the challenge of setting a clear goal, whether it’s improving performance, reducing costs, or meeting service-level objectives, and then finding a way to achieve it. My master’s thesis is closely related to these topics and you can find it here.
When I step away from research, I usually pick up my bass guitar. My music taste ranges from the heaviness of Opeth, Gojira, Tool, and Sepultura to the atmospheric sounds of Vangelis Papathanasiou, Hans Zimmer, and Ludwig Göransson. I also enjoy reading hard sci-fi, with The Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy among my favorites.
Feel free to reach out.
