Efthymios Papageorgiou

Hi! I’m Efthymis Papageorgiou, but you can call me Makis. I was born in Athens, but for many years now I’ve been living in the Heraklion of Crete, where I’m currently a Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the University of Crete. Alongside my studies, I work as a graduate research assistant at the Information Systems Lab at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH).

My main passion lies in modeling and controlling large-scale computing systems. I enjoy exploring both traditional control techniques and modern approaches like reinforcement learning. What excites me most is the challenge of setting a clear goal, whether it’s improving performance, reducing costs, or meeting service-level objectives, and then finding a way to achieve it. My master’s thesis is closely related to these topics and you can find it here.

When I step away from research, most people think I go hiking… in reality, I’m on the sofa watching movies while my brain keeps running experiments. I also enjoy reading hard sci-fi, with The Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy among my favorites, and playing bass guitar.

Feel free to reach out.
